Wondering about Zoom Etiquette?

Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, BlueJeans – virtual meeting platforms are now a regular part of business life. But just because we’re working from home doesn’t mean professionalism goes out the window.

If you’ve ever left a virtual meeting feeling distracted, confused, or even flabbergasted by what you saw (or heard), you’re not alone. From bathroom walk-ins to unmuted chaos, virtual meeting mishaps happen more often than they should.

Let’s talk about simple Zoom etiquette tips that can instantly elevate your online presence.

Adjusting to the new remote normal

Businesses across the country have adapted to remote work environments. While we’ve gotten comfortable using video platforms, professionalism still matters. A virtual meeting is still a meeting—and it deserves the same respect as an in-person one.

1. Present yourself professionally

Brush your hair (yes, really)

This is still a business meeting. Messy hair and pajama tops send a message—even if you don’t intend them to. Whether it’s your first impression or your fiftieth, how you present yourself sticks in people’s minds.

Dress the part

Sweatpants may be tempting, but wear what you would have worn if you were meeting in person. When you look professional, you tend to feel more confident and prepared.

2. Be mindful of your background

No one wants to see your bed

We understand that home offices sometimes double as bedrooms or living rooms. Still, your background matters. A messy space or overly personal backdrop can distract from the conversation.

Consider repositioning your setup, using a neutral wall, heading outside for natural scenery, or selecting a clean virtual background. Your environment reflects your professionalism.

Watch your lighting

If you’re sitting in front of a bright window, the light can wash you out and make it difficult for others to see you. Face the light source instead of sitting with it behind you for a clearer, more polished appearance.

3. Control your audio

Immediately mute your microphone when joining a meeting. Background noise—kids, pets, typing, traffic—can quickly disrupt the flow of conversation.

Keep your microphone muted until it’s your turn to speak. Clear audio helps everyone stay focused and reduces echo or overlapping conversations.

4. Turn your camera on (when appropriate)

If circumstances allow, keep your camera on. Seeing facial expressions and body language improves communication and helps build connection—just like an in-person meeting.

Of course, there are exceptions. If you’re unexpectedly in a public space or facing technical issues, it’s courteous to keep your camera off to avoid distractions.

Remember: A meeting is still a meeting

Whether face-to-face or online, professionalism remains the standard. Remote work doesn’t mean lowering expectations. It simply means adapting them to a different environment.

A little attention to your appearance, background, lighting, and audio can go a long way toward maintaining a polished and professional presence.
