Do I Really Need to Post About National Hot Dog Day?

National Hot Dog Day is just one of the wild and weird “holidays” everyone posts about these days. The National Day Calendar started tracking fun and unusual celebrations like this back in 2013 — and since then, it’s become a cultural phenomenon.

The official National Day Calendar includes celebrations such as:

  • National Scribble Day
  • National Take a Walk in the Park Day
  • World Wish Day
  • Universal Letter Writing Week
  • International Clown Week
  • National Goat Cheese Month

That’s right — there are days, weeks, and months to celebrate just about anything.

The National Day Calendar founder Marlo Anderson prompts people to “Celebrate Every Day!” Whether it’s National Hot Dog Day or one of thousands of other celebrations, you may wonder if you really need to post about a silly holiday on your company’s social media accounts.

The answers to a few important questions can help you decide.

Is the National Day Calendar Relevant to My Business?

Sometimes, the connection is obvious. If you own a hot dog stand, you should almost certainly post about National Hot Dog Day. You may also want to post about anything related to ketchup, mustard, or relish.

Other times, it’s also obvious when a post would be a stretch. A hair salon would have to come up with something extremely clever to make National Hot Dog Day feel relevant.

What’s most interesting is the in-between cases: the days that aren’t obviously related to your business, but could be with the right angle.

For example, let’s say you own a hot dog stand and it’s National Sandwich Day (November 3). Don’t brush it off too quickly — you could post a poll asking:

Is a hot dog a sandwich?

That simple question can drive engagement fast.

Is the National Day Calendar Relevant to My Audience?

The day shouldn’t just be relevant to what you sell — it should also be relevant to your target audience.

For example, if you’re targeting people in recovery or those under the drinking age, there’s probably no need to post about National IPA Day — unless you make alcohol-free IPAs.

When you look at any day on the calendar, keep your audience in mind. Use the data you have (including social ad insights) to understand what resonates. You might be surprised by what your audience actually responds to.

It can also help to create an audience persona. For example:

  • A mom in her mid-40s who leans on your brand for convenience
  • A teenage boy whose primary focus is getting into college

Those two audiences will respond to content very differently.

Is the Tone Right for My Brand?

Your business should have an established brand voice and tone. Maybe you’re fun and energetic. Maybe you’re serious and reverent. Maybe you’re informative and intellectual.

Whatever your tone is, make sure it matches the tone of the national day you’re considering posting about.

If your brand deals with serious topics in a somber tone, posting about a particularly silly holiday may feel off — and confuse your audience more than it helps.

Does It Fit Into My Content Calendar?

Even if a holiday matches your business, audience, and tone, it still may not be the right thing to post that day.

Sometimes you have something more important to share — like a product launch, a deadline, or a timely announcement. It’s usually best to prioritize what matters most.

The only time you should force a national calendar day into your content calendar is when it’s so directly related to your business that not posting would feel noticeable.

For example, a renowned cardiologist should probably prioritize posting about World Heart Day.

When in Doubt, Ask the Professionals

The National Day Calendar can be a great resource for content ideas. It can help you find topics that are timely, relevant, and likely to trend.

But you don’t need to post about every fun and unusual holiday. Instead, focus on what’s relevant, fits your brand voice, and makes sense in your calendar.
