In just a couple short months, I’ll be celebrating 3 years in business, and I’m so honored (and excited) to reach that milestone. One of the biggest things I’ve learned during this journey is that some clients—and potential clients—simply aren’t ready for the next step: outsourcing their marketing.
Outsourcing is a major decision, especially for small business owners who live and breathe their brand. It takes guts—but most of all, it takes trust.
3 barriers to overcome before outsourcing your marketing
If you’re considering outsourcing your digital marketing, here are three important questions to ask yourself first.
- Do you truly know your brand’s message? Do you know your brand’s message so well you could teach it to someone else? Or are you constantly changing your services, reaching for every opportunity that could fit under your umbrella? Before outsourcing, you’ll want clarity: what you do, who you serve, what makes you different, and how you want your brand to sound online.
- Do you have a marketing budget you’re ready to invest? Do you currently have a marketing budget? And can you realistically allocate some of it toward internet marketing—especially social media? If you’re banking on marketing to make you money so you can afford marketing, it may be time to pause and build a budget you’re comfortable investing first. Marketing and selling are two different things—especially in the digital world.
- Are you okay with someone else being “you” online? Good digital marketers do everything they can to learn your brand voice—tone, keywords, messaging style, and more. But the truth is, no one can ever be you. You have to be willing to let go of some control. A message may not be communicated exactly the way you would have said it—and that’s part of outsourcing.
Not ready yet? That’s okay.
Some clients aren’t ready—and that’s completely normal. If your business isn’t ready to outsource, there are still plenty of ways to move forward and strengthen your marketing skills in the meantime.
